Rethymno and South Crete

Dear friends

here are some tips about strolling around to the city of Rethymno or travelling to the places close to Triopetra. Keep in mind that although Triopetra seems to be far from the large cities of Crete it is also located at the very centre of the island and it is relatively close to Rethymno, Chania and Heraclion or even Lasithi. There is always to ways to choose. The safer one is to go to Rethymno and then follow the way to the place you want to visit. The adventurous way is to follow the road to Agia Galini (in case you want to visit the East part -Heraclion, Agios Nikolaos, Ierapetra) or to Preveli and Sfakia (in case you prefer to see the West side). We always recomend the first one but if you like adventurous holidays and have a real good map of Crete -not to mention a car in good condition, you can also choose the other way.

  Rethymno - the city
We will start our walk from the castle of Fortezza. There was the Acropolis of Ancient town of Rithymna. The fortress is situated on the hill and it was built 420 years ago. Since you are here you must visit Archaeological museum with exhibits from the Neolithic to the Roman era. In your way to the Old Town you can pass by from Museum of Contemporary Art in Chimaras street. You are in the middle of the Old Town now and you can visit the cafés, taverns and restaurants. You can not miss the ride on the "catwalk" of the coastal road, but even more the Venetian Harbour where you will admire the lighthouse, which was called Venetian but the truth is that it was built in the Egyptian period. Then you can wander in the Old Town streets and at the center of it there is no way not to go through the "Vrisakia", the Rimondi fountain (built in 1626). You can also see the old church of Santa Maria in Venetian era, (later Neratze Mosque, the mosque that is still to repair), the Folklore Museum (Bernardou Street) and of course you ‘ll pass by Platanos, a small square and meeting place with many cafes taverns, restaurants and bars. Before that you must see the Loggia (Paleologos and Arcadiou streets) the building which was the meeting point for the old noble Venetians (later became a mosque) one of the most beautiful Venetian buildings of the city-and there are not a few.
Now it's time to go back and do some shopring, even at the Archaeological Resources Fund-if it is open. At the end of this side of the Old Town you can see the Great Gate (Megali Porta). You must also see the church of St. Francis (now an exhibition centre) and the Municipal Library, worth a visit as a renewal, there is close to the Cathedral Church of Agia Barbara. You can also pass from the Lady of the Angels church, known as Mikri Panagia, at the Niciphorus Phocas street, which is the famous Long Strait crossing almost the entire Old City. Next to the Mosque Neratze, there is a new square (Asia Minor square) and of course theCity Park (or Garden) which is worth a stroll. Leaving the Garden and follow the road Moatsou, the distance is too small for the Paleontological Museum hosted the Mosque Mastaba, but should not miss and the oldest Mosque, Kara Musa Pasha at the junction of Hugo and Arkadiou streets. It is understood that the entire Old City holds a lot more treasure, but it is better to talk about the rest of the prefecture of Rethymno ..
Rethymno - the county
We start by Arkadi (22km), the great symbol of the Cretan insurrection, from basic choices, not only for the monument, the imposing facade and two-aisled church in the center of the monastery built in 1587sti an older 14th century, but for the scenic route passing through very picturesque villages. The traditional and full of ceramic artists Daisies (31 km) as the Eleftherna, 6 km below is definitely in your visit program as in Chromonastiri (11 km) where among other things will see the stunning Venetian palace Villa Klodian, which last year launched the Military Museum. Now Arkadi associated with Amari, another necessary trip to the villages there, as Gerakari, the parties, Fourfoura, Apodoulou, Patsos and more. Obviously you can’t leave Rethimno without visiting Anogeia (55 km). In your way to Anogia you can pass from Perama (25 km), Axos (44 km), and the surrounding villages of Mylopotamos as Zoniana (46 km). If you are lucky enough to see a traditional feast it’s even better. Now, if you have more time available you need a visit to the Ideon Andron, (21 km from Anogia) on the eastern side of the Psiloritis, at an altitude of 1498 m on the plateau of Nida. It is one of the most sacred caves of Minoan Crete, with rare archaeological finds.
Options we have on the north side, west to the traditional Diocese (18 km) with its endless beaches, the Mountros (21 km) Kato Poros (27 km), Episkopi (photo from the beach) and Argyroupoli (21 km) built on the ancient Lappas, at an altitude of 700m, with taverns that you will never forget until the Asi Gonia near the limits of Chania. In the same area ideal trip (that enters in Chania prefecture) in the plateau Kalikratis with the amazing canyon. From here there are options to either cross the canyon by feet to reach the plateau of Askifou, passing from Asfendou and from there to Frangokastello and Sfakia (for strong hikers) or choose the dirt road and continue by car (for possible drivers). Most definitely the walking path that goes through the Rodakino (44 km) meets Fragokastelo, with its medieval fortress and the legend to Drosoulites, resulting again in Sfakia. Curvy road but worth it. On the north side, going east Adelianos cross the plains with large hotels, we pass from Panormo beach (22 km) and Bali (31 km) with its beautiful beaches.
The road crosses the county with the final direction of Agia Irini, after pass from Armeni (10 km), and then you can see the intersection that leads to Kourtaliotiko Canyon and from there to predominantly tourist Plakias (34 km) or to Preveli Monastery (35 km ) and the southern beaches (see below). If you continue the road to till Agia Galini (56 km) you must pass anyway fromSpili (30 km) and stop on the famous fountains with carved lion heads.

South Rethymno - From Preveli to Agia Galini
Rethymno has a very nice and very large beach. If you prefer an organized type of holidays, umbrellas, deck chairs, the smell of sunscreen, summer supermarkets at your feet, let alone for bars and taverns, then stay there and do not move. Someone will notify you when the summer it's over. But if you like some adventure, let’s start a drive on the south side.
At twenty kilometers from Park of Rethymnon, on the road to Agia Galini, there are two intersections. The first one you meet will be the road that goes to Sfakia, and from there you can go to Plakias in only 15 km distance. It's a nice route that passes through the Agkouseliana and the Kanevo villages and then crosses the gorge of Kotsifou. From there the distance to the beach Damnoni (with the tavern on the one hand, and the tourist complex on the other) is only two kilometers. Even nicer is the sandy beach of Skinaria, a small paradise for nudists. But let’s come back to see the second intersection.
Just below the sign to Sfakia is another sign to Preveli, but first you must pass the Koxare, and through the Kourtaliotiko canyon. Wild beauty (if you stop you can see the depth of the waters of the Grand River, which flows to the sea, between "Vagies" (ie palm) and Sfakia (oleander). The route through the gorge is 7 km until it get in Asomatos and admire the sea. From here one sign says 5 and another 6 km, certainly soon see the Monastery of Preveli down and then arrive at the beautiful bridge with necessary tavern. may continue for the famous beach (best but the heart of the tourist season) or Moni Preveli back.
Another option you have is to take the path beside the river and soon you will see a small sign that says Drymiskos the one (and Drymiskiano Amoudi) and Preveli on the other. Take a look at the canyon and get back to the junction. Just below, another intersection and go down if you want to know Drymiskiano Amoudi and the first of the unknown beaches of south Rethymno. Otherwise you go to Drymisko but must warn you that for 7 kilometres the condition of the road is not very good. After Drymiskos anyway you can see a lot of beaches waiting for you. The first one is just two kilometers below the village Kerame. Located three kilometers from Kerame you can see the intersection to Amoudi (other three kilometers) and 500 meters Gialopotama another intersection. In Amoudi, the road is uphill and downhill, but it is paved, until at 2 km from the coast. The beaches are beautiful there with rocks, pebbles, tools, and small creeks succeed one another.
If we continue on our way to Agia Fotini, we can reach the beach of Agia Fotia (Holy Fire) (3 km) with the magic tavern (with rooms to rent) and a scenery straight from the 70s with the small bay ideal for children. Before that you can reach (with a short walk) another beach with beautiful dunes. Three more Kilometres and you can reach Ligres, beach with rocks, and a small river. There are taverns there, too. There is not much of a shade, as in most of these beaches. After Ligres there is the village of Agia Paraskevi, (at 3kilometres, turn right) and continuing down to two kilometers there is Triopetra. But you can find infos about Triopetra in another page. Now if you want to go east you must tale the direction to the village Akoumia and turn right at the first intersection towards St Paul and arrive in two or three kilometers to the small Triopetra. Less spectacular but more sheltered from the wind. If you want something better you can go to Agios Pavlos, where seldom is windy. If you stay longer in St. Paul (the area has several yoga centers) you can visit the surrounding beaches or else tastes a little less adventurous option and visit (within about 15 miles) Agia Galini. But we are sure you will prefer to return to the paradise of Triopetra!
